Welcome Weekend!

After a tough week, looking forward to a fun weekend...I'll tell you all about it later...  :-)  And I'll try to remember my camera....

And it's Wednesday

and almost the end of September already.

Update on Josiah - no broken bones.  With the threat of physical therapy or a visit to an orthopedist hanging over him, he is diligently taking pain medicine and doing stretching exercises to heal his tendon.

Update on Mark - I took him to the doctor today as I am concerned about his walking, muscle-tone, and coordination.  The end result is that we are meeting with a physical therapist next Wednesday.  She also ordered blood work as he drinks all the time.  He had come down with a cold in between when I made the appointment and now.  He's now on an antibiotic because his chest sounds quite "junky".

Tomorrow's plans - laundry, housework, get together with some other friends who are adoptive and/or foster moms.

Missing Posts

There were 2 events that I missed posting about when I should have....

September 16 was the 3rd anniversary of Zach & Mark's adoption day.  And, Sunday Mark turned 4!  I'll blog more about that once I get his birthday pictures added to the computer.
 Mark

 Zach

And for good measure, here's the baby of the family as well.

Monday Update

Today was another lovely fall day.  We had a nice weekend too.  I got the house cleaned (except the windows)...quite an accomplishment!  I very much miss having someone cleaning my house for me once a week.  :-)

Saturday night we went to the PA Family Institute Banquet and heard Eric Metaxas speak.  He is the author of the best selling book, Bonhoeffer.  The food was incredible...particularly the dark chocolate and peanut butter pie for dessert.

Sunday morning we went to church.  I brought the younger 4 home for pancakes while Randy, Josiah, & Autumn stayed for a Chinese meal fundraiser.  In the afternoon we joined a bunch of people from our church family at a local park for a softball game and then went to the one couple's house for supper.  Lovely evening.

This morning I finally made a trip to Walmart.  I forgot my list but remembered almost everything...everything except the very first item on the list.  As I had not had coffee, I challenged my inner fear of taking all of the boys somewhere where some of them cannot be contained by a cart, and went into Sheetz for a cup.  I got a lovely cup of Vanilla Chai.  And I validated my fear that the boys would be hard to contain.  We survived.  Next we went to the park and visited with a new friend and her daughter.  Then home to put away our purchases and have naps.  I picked Josiah up from school and took him to the doctor (he's been complaining of foot pain for about a month now...I've been writing it off as growing pains).  Anyway, they think he has a Peroneal Tendon Sprain (the tendon at the side of your foot).  He has exercises he needs to do and he needs to get his foot x-rayed.  So, tomorrow while Zach is in occupational therapy, I'm going to take Josiah for an x-ray.

Tonight was our school's first (of 3 yearly) PTF (Parent-Teacher Fellowship) meetings.  It was nice to talk to the kids' teachers and some of the other parents.  If I go to this, I usually get a babysitter (as I did tonight) so it's also a nice little break for me.

Now I need to resist the books that call my name and get to bed.  I've been staying up entirely too late reading....

Still haven't read the Joy Dare prompts for September, but here's 3 gifts for today:

  • Vanilla Chai
  • Visiting with a friend
  • Meeting a new patron at school who happened to be someone I knew 5 years (or so) ago

Friday Morning

It is quiet.  I hear the birds outside and traffic from a nearby road...a noise I don't hear during the day...perhaps an airplane, the click of the keys as I type.

In about 10 minutes (give or take) the kids will start getting up and straggling (or running excitedly, depending on their age and mood) into the kitchen.

Enjoying the peace.  Enjoying a cup of tea (Bigelow English Breakfast, no sugar, no milk).  I got out of bed when my alarm clock went off this morning, something that some mornings is a struggle.  2 little boys had joined me at some point during the night so in my effort to extricate myself from between them to turn off the alarm, I woke up enough to stay up.  :-)

Today I need to do the ever present "clean up the house" and the laundry and dishes.  I really need to also clean and bake.  My sister-in-law is stopping in for coffee at some point this morning (I think).  I will go with Randy to his follow-up CT Scan this afternoon.  And I need to do the business bookwork as well.

We don't have much planned for the first half of this weekend, but then we have assorted things from Saturday evening until Sunday evening.

I hear someone coughing....have a good weekend!

Random Wednesday

I haven't been in the mood to blog....still reading others' blogs though....

Pondering how so much anger, disappointment, disillusionment comes from unmet expectations.  And how often those unmet expectations are rooted in selfishness.

My 7-year-old's teacher has been reading a story to them about slavery.  So hard and saddening to explain slavery to my children....

MOPS starts again this week.  I have apprehensions.  I'm not a mom of preschoolers (only), but also the mom of an almost teenager and a tween and an elementary school child.  I'm the mom of some kids who have (as their therapists describe) issues with connections in their brains (possibly due to prenatal exposure or trauma, but unknown) resulting in 1 sweet boy with anger and impulse issues and 1 sweet boy with speech issues.  I don't want to disillusion all those sweet new(er) moms that come to MOPS...next they won't have any more kids!

I have always enjoyed baking.  But right now I am not finding joy in it...perhaps it's because I now need to do it in larger quantities?  Or because I need to do it more frequently?  I don't know, but I'm simply not motivated.   Of course, I could just buy apples and carrots which would probably be healthier for all of us!  I do have a lovely recipe on my fridge for "Donut Muffins" from the blog www.mennonitegirlscancook.ca....perhaps I'll make it tomorrow.  Looks so delicious!

The weather is cooler, and I've been enjoying it immensely.  Enjoying wearing cooler weather clothing and drinking more coffee and tea.  :-)

Last night, while Randy was home, I took the older 3 kids to the library and bought myself a stack of books so I'm off of here now to go read....

Have a lovely week!

Wednesday morning

I'm enjoying a few quiet moments before the house erupts with life when everyone starts getting up.  For the most part I am back to getting up early...it's working better this year.  Usually Micah stays asleep, even if he has crawled into my bed at some point during the night.

Today is Mark's speech therapy.  He has come so far!  In addition to most vowels, we now usually get the beginning sounds of words which is quite helpful in figuring out what he is saying.  Not that we understand everything, but so much more than last summer when we first started doing speech with him.  Mark is sweet...and has one little quirk.  He sings in his sleep.  Yes, early in the morning, while it is still dark, I will hear him singing away (can't make out words) in a rather monotone voice.  Very sweet, but rather disturbing if you're trying to sleep!  Amazingly, usually everyone else sleeps through it.  I guess mom's are just more tuned in to their little boys.  :-)

5 Random Facts about me:

1.  Books - I love to read...anything and everything (as long as it's clean)...fiction, nonfiction, biographies, love it.  BUT, I refuse to read the popular Amish fiction.  I read a book or two.  Just not interested.  Maybe because I actually live in an area where Amish are common?  Maybe because I'm skeptical and think it's all romanticized and over dramatized...I don't really know, haven't thought about the why much until now.  I just don't.  (**as  a side note, I read there is a new series on the Amish on TLC...some of my friends actually know those people, and they are not the "just off the farm" they are represented to be.  Some of them have not been Amish for several years.)

2.  I love Chocolate-milk or dark, not white.  And not cheap.  Hershey's is okay.  Wilbur is good.  Dove is good.  But Lindt, ahh, love Lindt Lindor Truffles....I'm sure there are lots of other great chocolates out there.  Maybe some day I'll buy them.  On occasion I get into a specialty shop and try a piece...love those little hand made delicacies!

3.  International Delight Chocolate Caramel Creamer is my current favorite to put in my coffee.  Hazelnut is a close second.

4.  I need to bake 4 dozen cupcakes today for tomorrow's hot lunch at school.  At our kids' (private) school, they take packed lunches every day.  Once a month the parents from a particular grade provide the food for a school hot lunch.  With 3 kids in school, I'll get to help provide the lunch 3 times.

5.  I love fall....cool mornings, warmer days, the rustle and smell of leaves.  Not so wild about the coming cold weather....  Love apples and pumpkins and baking and cooking...not so wild about cleaning up the mess.

I just remembered.  I bought pretzel sandwiches from a girl at church to support something or other...sandwiches are already made for lunch!  Perfect.

Okay.  I am obviously rambling.  Have a good day!

Thinking about miracles

John 9:1-3
As he [Jesus] went along, he saw a man blind from birth.  His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"  "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life."

I tend to think...sometimes to much.

A few notes before I begin my "thinking":
1.  Miracles are "miracles" because they are rare, not commonplace.  If everyone were healed, for instance, that would be commonplace, normal so to say, not a miracle.

2.  I know that all the chaos and pain and suffering in this world are a direct result of sin...when Adam & Eve sinned, the whole world changed.  Human (sinful) choices directly and indirectly affect those around them, from families to communities to nations.  But it all goes back to sin.  Click Here for a link explaining all this.

Anyway, I was thinking today about how some of my friends have seen magnificent healing works of God.  And I was thinking how in the church it seems that so often we pray for healing for one of us who are ill, and how rarely we see those magnificent healings (perhaps more frequently then I realize...perhaps not).

So as I was thinking about this, the verses above came to my mind.  And I had to think, what brings more glory to God?  Believing in Him in the midst of great suffering, or being miraculously healed?  Could there be more great healings in areas of the world where Christ is little known because that draws attention to God and brings him glory?  Do Christians in affluent areas of the world experience fewer healings because it could be attributed to science and medicine instead of God?  Is a Christian's faithfulness through illness a greater testimony to God then if he or she were instantly healed?

"But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."  John 3:21

And those are my random thoughts for today....Have a good one!

Only a little longer

Randy should be home from his run to Washington State tomorrow evening...quite exciting!  :-)

Haven't blogged much lately, not even in my head.

I've been home a lot this week.  Other than one trip to the orthodontist and one to the speech therapist.  We hosted Play Group on Tuesday.  Some little boys were so excited and hard to calm down.  Lovely to gather with other foster/adoptive moms.  Hope we didn't overwhelm the one who attended for the first time.  :-)

Today we are going out.  The week is getting long with being mostly at home and having the boys best friends/neighbors away for the week.  We're going on a hunt for apples for applesauce and then we will go play at the park.

I don't think I mentioned this before, although it's been on my heart, the boys' birth mom gave birth to another son about a month ago.  He's been in the NICU with complications.  Anyway, he is improving and should be released soon.  Please pray for a home for him, preferably one that is open to interaction with us/his siblings, as well as continued improvement to his health.  **Update:  He has a home and it is in our area, will need to wait to find out if they are open to interacting with us.

It's cloudy today, but at least the humidity is lower, so I am thankful.

Labor Day

My kids asked me what "Labor Day" is.  I said that I think it's a summer holiday for the working person...but I never looked it up to verify.  And everyone has off unless they work in retail.  I kind of assume that 30 years ago everything was closed...but I don't really know.

I decided that we would labor together on Labor Day to get our house a bit more presentable.  Our foster/adopt playgroup is starting to meet again tomorrow which provided much motivation for me.  I still need to clean the bathroom and the kitchen floor, but thought that doing that in the morning might work just as well.  Especially in the bathroom since somehow it seems to get nasty instantly.

In addition to the main floor of the house, we tackled the scary basement with all those random toys that were NOT where they belonged.  Everything is now in it's assigned box or place.  There are 3 types of toys out to play with (which of course are to be put away before getting out the next thing).  This time it is Lego Duplo, Trucks/Cars (not matchbox, bigger size), and Snap-n-Style Dolls...for the little girls that may be visiting.

I even tackled those piles on the counter....those things that need to go somewhere, but I'm never quite sure where.

Supper was burritos made with mesquite chicken/rice filling found cheap at the discount store.  Followed by Ice Cream Sundae Desserts from the same discount store.  Quick, Easy, Delicious!

What are my gifts today (Joy Dare...didn't print the September prompts yet, so this is on my own):

  • a cool breeze on a humid day
  • gentle showers on this dry land
  • getting the basement organized again...and the help of the children with minimal complaining.
Have a lovely evening!

Home Decorating

5 years ago we added a lovely kitchen/dining addition to our home.  At the time, as well as many times since then, that I'd like to add something above the broad doorway leading to the rest of the house.

Well, I finally did.  I ordered a Bible verse and stuck it on the wall.  For future reference, I'd recommend getting someone to help you with something this large, but I managed.  :-)

I chose a verse I absolutely love...and now I smile when I walk through the door.  Back in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy perhaps?) God tells his people to write his word on their doors.  And truly, even in the few days since I've had this, I've been blessed and encouraged immensely.

Flash back to June

I have 2 cameras.  I've been using the one, but as Randy has that one with him, I switched back to this one...and found these photos of Zach's 5th birthday that I had never uploaded.

Day 4

or Randy's 10-Day Run is nearly complete....  So far, so good.

Today is my birthday.  I celebrated with my sisters & Autumn by going out for supper (Isaac's) and shopping (Tanger, ACMoore, Old Navy, Park City) last night.  Tonight we went to Arby's and got milkshakes since I was craving one.  I also got myself a beef n cheddar sandwich...I love those!  Anyway, then we came home and the kids had ham and cheese mountain pies or hot dogs over the fire.  It was a bit warm for the fire pit, but it was fun anyway.  We ended the evening by toasting marshmallows for a snack.

With Randy gone, I've been doing a lot of reading...sadly, I've been reading rather lame books because that's what I've been finding for free for my Kindle...but on the other hand, I do enjoy some light (no drama) reading sometimes.

It's been quite warm and humid...I'm hoping the humidity breaks soon.  This past week the nights were nice and cool and I was getting spoiled.  But I know the cooler weather is coming and I'll soon be complaining about the cold so I'm trying to enjoy it.

Janae & Zach spent last night and most of today with Grammy & Grandpa and a couple of cousins.  They had a blast and are quite exhausted tonight.  Even without Zach around, the little boys manage to get into plenty of trouble on their own.  Trying to keep up with them is quite a project!  Most recently, they like to open the window at naptime (the screen only covers half the window, so they can slide it up or slide the top half down) and then they throw their blankets and pillows out the window...while being quiet so I don't realize it.  Even though they are 14-1/2 months apart, I feel sometimes like perhaps I have twins...especially since Mark tends to be more delayed overall.  They sure keep us on our toes!  But oh those giggles...wouldn't trade that for anything!

Everyone is settled in bed now.  And it's quiet.  Good night....
